Toyota recall overview:

  • Who: Toyota is recalling 32,733 Sequoia and Tundra vehicles in Canada.
  • Why: A defect in the rearview camera may prevent the image from displaying, increasing crash risk.
  • Where: The recall is active in Canada.

Toyota has issued a recall for more than 32,700 vehicles in Canada due to a defect in the rearview camera system. The issue affects the display of the camera image, which is crucial for safe reversing, and could lead to an increased risk of accidents.

The recall was announced by Transport Canada on Oct. 1 and includes all Sequoia models from 2023 to 2025 and Tundra models, including hybrids, from 2022 to 2025. The problem specifically impacts vehicles equipped with a 14-inch multimedia display.

According to Transport Canada, the defect may cause the rearview camera image to not display correctly or at all, which is a violation of Canadian regulations that mandate the image to be visible when the vehicle is in reverse.

Toyota advises drivers to be especially vigilant when reversing

The recall notice emphasizes the potential safety risk, noting that the absence of a clear rearview image could lead to accidents.

“A rearview camera image that doesn’t display correctly could reduce a driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash,” the notice said.

The Sequoia recall affects vehicles with a specific multimedia display size, highlighting the importance of checking whether a vehicle is impacted.

To address the defect, Toyota will notify affected vehicle owners in writing. Owners are encouraged to visit a Toyota dealership to have their vehicle’s multimedia display software updated, which should resolve the issue.

For more information, consumers can visit Toyota’s recall database or contact their local dealership to verify if their vehicle is part of the Toyota recall.

Toyota says it has not received any reports of injuries related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Earlier, Toyota recalled about 591,000 vehicles, including certain Venza, Crown, Crown Signia, RAV4, GR Corolla, 4Runner, Camry, Grand Highlander, Tacoma, Highlander and Lexus LS, RX and TX models, due to a malfunction in the infotainment system that may cause the display screen to fail or shut down unexpectedly.
