AMarini Foods Limited has initiated a recall of specific Genoa salami products following a Salmonella outbreak that has affected 57 people, with seven requiring hospitalization, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).Â
The recall was issued on June 4 after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency suspended Marini Foods Limited’s Safe Food For Canadians licence. The affected products include Bona brand Mild Genova Salami and Rea brand Genoa Salami in Sweet and Hot varieties, identified by specific lot codes and universal product codes (UPCs).Â
The recalled products were distributed to various outlets, including grocery stores, specialty markets and delis across Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario.
According to the recall notice, additional cases may continue to be reported, highlighting the ongoing risk to consumers. Many of the affected individuals reported consuming the salami in prepared sandwiches or from deli counters where the recalled products were served.
Consumers urged to check for recalled salami products
The PHAC advises consumers and businesses to verify if they possess the recalled salami products by checking product names, sizes, UPCs and lot codes. The agency warns against consuming, serving or selling these products and recommends disposing of or returning them to the place of purchase.
Consumers who have bought prepared sandwiches containing salami should contact the retailer to confirm if the recalled products were used.
Marini Foods Limited is cooperating with health authorities to address the issue, the recall states. The company has halted distribution of the affected products and is working to ensure that all recalled items are removed from shelves and returned.
Marini Foods Limited is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Earlier this year, Burnbrae Farms issued a recall for multiple brands of shell eggs in British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario over concerns they may be contaminated with salmonella.
