Mounted Police Bullying Class Action Lawsuit Overview:
- Who: Two former mounties have lodged a class action lawsuit against the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and government.
- Why: The $1.1 billion lawsuit lodged against the RCMP alleges systemic bullying and harassment in the force. The RCMP is trying to get it thrown out.
- Where: Canada
Two former mounties who say they were bullied and harassed while working for The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are urging the Supreme Court to reject the RCMP’s latest bid to have their class action lawsuit thrown out.
Just two months after the Federal Court of Appeal rejected the RCMP’s bid to have the lawsuit decertified, the government’s lawyers filed another appeal in the Supreme Court of Canada, The Canadian Press reports.
The Crown lawyers say the class action lawsuit is unnecessary because the RCMP already has mechanisms in place to resolve workplace disputes.
However, Plaintiffs Geoffrey Greenwood and Todd Gray have hit back, arguing that, before unionization of the force, the only recourse was to go through the chain of command who were either involved in the abuse or protected those who were.
The pair are seeking to represent a class of RCMP members and reservists who served from Jan. 1, 1995, until the recent unionization of affected members.
Plaintiff Says He Was Victim Of Backlash, Bullying, Ostracization After Reporting Bribery, Corruption
The initial complaint was filed in 2018 and alleged that due to the toxic workplace, those who were subject to bullying, intimidation and harassment within the RCMP’s ranks were unable to report problems through the chain of command. The lawsuit alleges that those in charge of dealing with complaints were either complicit in the alleged complaints, or helped cover them up.
Lead plaintiff Geoffrey Greenwood said he was the victim of backlash, bullying and ostracization after reporting claims of bribery and corruption among his fellow drug officers.
“I ended up kind of leaving a shell of a person,” he told CBC. “Your whole character is torn apart and stripped down and you’re villainized.”
Greenwood said he suffered PTSD as a result.
The lawsuit claims victims of the toxic work environment suffered from both physical and emotional injuries including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety.
The plaintiffs also claim their careers suffered because they lost promotions and early retirement opportunities from direct and indirect retaliatory actions against them.
The RCMP class action lawsuit is certified at $1.1 billion. The plaintiffs are seeking damages and allege that the RCMP violated its statutory, contractual and common law duties to class members.
