Honda Canada agreed to pay $15 million to resolve a class action lawsuit claiming the paint on certain Honda and Acura vehicles has a defect that can make the paint discolor and peel.

The settlement benefits consumers who purchased a 2006 to 2013 Honda Civic or 2006 to 2011 Acura CSX vehicle in Quebec and observed paint degradation (paint discoloration or peeling) after May 4, 2015, for Honda vehicles or after Sept. 4, 2017, for Acura vehicles.

Honda Canada is the Canadian branch of Honda Motor Co. The company sells Honda and Acura vehicles.

According to a class action lawsuit against Honda Canada, the company knowingly sold Honda and Acura vehicles with a paint defect. The paint allegedly suffered from premature degradation, resulting in paint discoloration and peeling.ย

Plaintiffs in the case say they had to pay out of pocket to fix this issue despite Honda being at fault.

Honda Canada hasnโ€™t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $15 million class action settlement to resolve these allegations.

Under the terms of the Honda paint defect settlement, class members can receive several benefits including reimbursement, repairs and more.

Class members who incurred unreimbursed expenses while trying to correct the defective paint after May 4, 2015, for Honda Civic vehicles or after Sept. 4, 2017, for Acura CSX vehicles can receive reimbursement of up to $2,550.ย

Class members who experienced paint degradation and have not had their vehicle repainted can receive up to $2,550 to have their vehicle repainted at one of the many body shops authorized by the settlement.

Class members who qualify for the repainting payment of up to $2,550 but who do not wish to have their car repainted can receive 60% of what they would have received for repainting, or up to $1,530.ย

Class members who sold their vehicle at a lower price due to paint degradation can receive up to $1,530 for the diminished resale value.

The payment amounts described above represent the maximum amount a class member can receive for each type of compensation. Actual compensation rates will vary depending on the year of the vehicle and the parts affected.ย

For example, a class member whose 2013 vehicle experienced paint degradation on all parts would receive a maximum payment of $2,550. In contrast, a class member whose 2006 vehicle experienced paint degradation only on the roof would receive a payment of $348.81. More information regarding payment rates is available on the settlement website.

A judge granted final approval to the Honda paint defect settlement July 13, 2022.

In order to receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by March 31, 2023.

  1. Wanda Cushing says:

I am so upset that I just found this out. My 2015 Honda CRV has started bubbling and peeling paint above the lift back. What to do? This should not be happening!

  2. Marcia Mallet says:

Just heard about this today(03072025). My 2014 RDX paint(white diamond pearl) bubbled and then began peeling off at the top of the hatch opening where it meets the roof. There is a strip of bare metal exposed. I took it to the Acura body shop and was told the whole roof and hatch opening would have to be sanded, scraped and repainted. $2-3,000.00! The shop manager told me about this widespread issue with the paint.

  3. Anthony Sookoo says:

2017 Honda accord paint peeling only 35,000 km contacted Honda they indicated that I should take it to the local dealer. The local dealer does not want to do anything about it. Honda is not a credible company to deal with when it comes to their vehicle and they paint peeling problem. not very pleased with the customer relation department sucks

  4. Jennifer Damesquita says:

My Honda pilot went in for this recall before deadline. Now the back hitch is bubbling and peeling, parts of the door are peeling as well. Honda should have had these vehicles repainted in their entirety. What do I do now??

  5. Jerry Burgess says:

My pilot started peeling off the roof now its the hood and tailgate ants is bubbling up on the sides of the roof and top of doors

    1. Nicole Antony says:

my started on my roof too I had a 2009 and so I repainted my roof it was a heafty penny to say the least but there was a previous owner so I didnโ€™t know there was ever this problemโ€ฆ. Well then the clear coat on the hood startedโ€ฆ.I traded it in for my 2020 civicโ€ฆ. I really donโ€™t know why I chose to repaint my roof on a 2009 wasnโ€™t my brightest momentโ€ฆ. Things like this really suck if you do everything you can to take care of your vehicle and it ends up looking like junk anywaysโ€ฆ..

  6. amir hussaini says:

I own a 06 civic for the past 11 years and I never saw or heard about this lawsuit until now so i didn’t put the claim. What should I do?
