Toyota is recalling more than 142,000 Prius vehicles from model years 2023 to 2026, including the Prius Prime, due to a defect in the electric door switches.
According to the Transport Canada recall notice, issued Jan. 29, water intrusion into the rear door handle switches can lead to a short circuit, which may result in the rear doors opening unexpectedly while driving.
“If this occurs while the rear doors are unlocked, a rear door can open while driving, increasing the risk of injury,” the Toyota recall says.
This recall is an expansion of a previous recall, Transport Canada recall no. 2024-228, and vehicles repaired under that recall will also require this new repair.
To address this issue, Toyota dealers will modify the left and right rear-door switch circuits to prevent activation, even if shorted. All repairs will be conducted free of charge to the vehicle owners.
Toyota Prius owners urged to enable automatic door locking
Toyota is taking proactive steps to resolve the issue by modifying the affected vehicles’ rear-door switch circuits. The company plans to notify vehicle owners by late March, urging them to visit a dealership for the necessary repairs related to the Toyota recall.
In the meantime, Toyota advises owners to enable the automatic door locking function through the vehicle’s head unit to minimize the risk.

Last November, Toyota recalled more than 1 million vehicles due to a software glitch in the rearview camera system, affecting Toyota Prius and various other models.
Toyota says it has not received any reports of injury related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
