Ozempic side effects class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Canadian law firm Siskinds has filed a class action lawsuit against Ozempic manufacturer Novo Nordisk.
  • Why: Novo Nordisk is accused of failing to adequately describe the potential side effects of Ozempic, a medication created to treat Type 2 diabetes that has gained popularity as a weight loss drug.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

A Canadian law firm is pursuing a class action lawsuit against Ozempic manufacturer Novo Nordisk over claims the pharmaceutical company failed to adequately describe the potential side effects of it and other medications.

The class action lawsuit — which has not yet been authorized by a judge — was filed last month by the Siskinds Law Firm in the Supreme Court of British Columbia, reports CTV News

Damages resulting from alleged side-effects related to the use of Novo Nordisk’s Rybelsus and Wegovy drugs are also reportedly being requested in the class action lawsuit.

The law firm wants to represent a class of Canadians who suffered “serious” gastrointestinal or gallbladder harms” after using drugs containing semaglutide.

Ozempic may be linked to increase in cases of pancreatitis, bowel construction, says class action

Ozempic was created as a medication to help individuals with Type 2 diabetes but has recently gained popularity as a weight loss drug, however, it is being alleged that it may be causing an increase in cases of pancreatitis and bowel construction, reports CTV News.

Siskinds argues side effects are caused by the ingestion of semaglutide — the main ingredient in Ozempic — which acts to stimulate a decrease in blood sugar levels while stimulating insulin production and suppressing appetite.

More than 3.5 million prescriptions of Ozempic were filled in 2022, meanwhile, according to the class action lawsuit, despite the drug not being officially cleared by Canadian regulators to be used for weight loss, reports CTV News.

Wegovy is the only one of the drugs that has reportedly been approved to be used as a weight loss medication, with Ozempic rather often  prescribed for “off-label” use.

Last month, investment banker Jefferies Financial released a study on the potential benefits of weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy that estimated airlines could save millions of dollars in fuel per year if all their passengers lost 10 pounds on average.

  1. Pamela Deguire says:

I was on ozempic for approximately 6 months. No side effects known to me at the time of starting. Approximately 6 months of use I began having gallbladder problems. Constant puking, stones, sludge and eventually infection. I had it removed. I also began having kidney drainage problems at the same time called hydronephritis. It is still on going at this point and concerned with long term damage.

  2. S0me1 says:

I was on Ozempic for a little over 2 years which at the time of being prescribed I wasnt warned I could end up with life altering illnesses. All I was told was that vomiting was a side effect but that it was temporary. I suffered problems alot during the 2.5 years constantly seeing my gastroenterologist, repeatedly being in hospital getting test after test which I now suffer from Gerd it was i in 2022 that I was diagnosed with Gastroparesis. Nobody knows who doesnt suffer with this what it is like. The pain is unbearable. The vomiting I have to live with. Always regurgitating is something I have to tolerate.

  3. Angela Hildrum says:

I was prescribed ozempic and immediately had severe gut pain, I even went to the hospital and saw and gastrointestinologist. I was unable to go to the washroom for almost 3 weeks and had telescoping in my intestine. Severe pain.

  4. Angela Monti says:

I was prescribed Osempix to decrease the size of my liver. I’ve recently experienced a slowed digestive system and have been prescribed medication to stimulate my intestinal tract. It caused me much pain.

  5. Richard Garber says:

I have been taking Ozempic as prescribed for Diabetes with absolutely no side effects. One wonders if there is a linkage between the claimants and its use in place of diet and exercise for weight reduction?
