Opioid Epidemic Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: A man who says he was over prescribed OxyContin lodged a class action lawsuit against opioid supplier McKinsey & Company.
  • Why: The plaintiff claims McKinsey has helped fuel an opioid epidemic in Canada by misinforming physicians and targeting doctors prone to oversupplying patients with the addictive drugs.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit is pending in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

Opioid supplier and global consulting firm McKinsey & Company has been helping fuel an epidemic currently affecting Canada, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Jordan Francis Charlie claims McKinsey consulted opioid manufacturers on how to misinform physicians and get their addictive painkillers into the hands of the doctors prone to over-prescribing.

Charlie wants to represent a Class of Canadian residents who were prescribed and became addicted to opioids since 2002.

The plaintiff says he became addicted to opioids, lost his job, and lost custody of his kids after he was prescribed OxyContin in 2007 following a back injury suffered while working in forestry.

Opioid Manufacturer Faces Lawsuits, Bankruptcy in US

McKinsey reached a settlement worth around $573 million earlier this year with attorneys general from several US states over allegations the company helped push OxyContin offered by Purdue Pharma.

Purdue Pharma has since filed for bankruptcy protection, according to The New York Times

Charlie claims that, in addition to helping opioid manufacturers nudge doctors to push their drugs on the Canadian population, McKinsey also helped convince manufacturers to look the other way as their painkillers fell in the hands of black market sellers.

Canada is currently the world’s second largest consumer of opioids — behind only the US — and experienced 21,174 opioid-attributed deaths between January 2016 and December 2020, according to the class action lawsuit.

Charlie claims McKinsey is guilty of negligence, breach of consumer protection statutes, conspiracy, unjust enrichment, and healthcare costs.

The plaintiff is represented by David Sterns, Louis Sokolov, Mishel Logasov, and Adil Abdulla of Sotos LLP and Jody Brown and Geetha Philipupillai of Goldblatt Partners LLP.

  1. Justin Lawlor says:

Please include me in the class action lawsuit. Big Pharma destroyed my life and my quality of life has diminished significantly.

  2. Justin Lawlor says:

My left hip caused me incredible amounts of pain due to arthritis. Imagine trying to walk, stand and be active having a partially dislocated hip joint. This was all at the age of 27. I spoke to my family doctor who started me on Tylenol 3 but I eventually graduated to fentanyl because none of the other painkillers seemed to relieve me much. I was naive as to what would happen to me if I continued or discontinued taking my prescription. Withdrawal is agonizing and excruciating. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Unfortunately, I have been through it more than once but I am hard headed and usually don’t get things right the first time. I do make a point of learning from my many, many mistakes.

My opiate addiction was one of the main reasons my marriage failed. I ended up getting laid off, spending all of my money on fentanyl, oxycontin and hydromorphone to support my habit. I became so tolerant to the painkillers that even the strongest opiate fentanyl, was not enough to sedate me, relieve pain or stress. I was just taking the fentanyl so as to not go through withdrawal. My tolerance to the medication got so high that no matter what I would take, in copious amounts, resulted in little to no relief.

I missed out on some critical years with my sons due to my selfish addiction. Oh, how I would have done things differently had I known the outcome. My boys know that their Dad loves them but I don’t get to see them as much as I would like to.

ALL OF THIS IS A RESULT OF BIG PHARMA INCENTIVIZING DOCTORS WITH PAYOUTS TO PUSH THESE TOXIC DRUGS ONTO THE POPULACE

  3. Cortney Brimner says:

I was prescribed 9 Oxy 80’s and 12 Percocet a DAY. I would appreciate it if someone could please contact me. I have had addiction problems due to these products and am still battling with soboxone to stay sober.

I was prescribed OxyContin after 3 unsuccessful back operations, I was on this medication for over 5 years until I started having severe cranial headaches and I was sent to the rehab dept but the stigma there is your a druggie, I wasn’t, I didn’t abuse my tablets but it was really starting to take a toll on my body, instead of rehab I begged my Dr to help ween me off and it took 18 months, now Im on tylonel 4 and still in constant pain, it was the most difficult time of my life being on OxyContin.

  6. Brian Kasperski says:

I was prescribed OxyContin at a pain clinic in Calgary for chronic back and knee pain in 2009. Shortly after that I became addicted and the dose kept increasing. I lost my job and my marriage and had to go into drug detox and treatment.

  7. Shannyn says:

Yes! I am now 3 years clean from heroin/fentanyl after having my “dr prescribed addiction” cut off literally overnight, as the college was cracking down. I also lost my common-law husband. He died of an overdose.. after also being prescribed MASSIVE amounts of oxycontin, oxycodone, codeine, AND belladonna/opium suppositories!!! ALL AT THE SAME TIME!!! we had thousands of dollars of black market meds prescribed monthly… I know this saga FAR too well!! PLEASE include me

  8. Kelly Pollock says:

Please include my son in your opioid class action law suit. He was injured at work around 2003 and prescribed copious amounts of oxy’s with unlimited amounts of refills. HUGE bottles of it at a time, assured it was safe and non-addicting. Became addicted, then they backed off on prescribing it which turned into dirty street drugs, lost work, everything he owned, overdoses, brain injury.

  9. B spence says:

My husband became addicted to opioids 2004 knee replacement he lost job house went thru rehab many times and is still fighting addictive it has ruined his life

  10. Cam McTavish says:

Please include me in your Opioid class action and relevant communications. I was addicted to Oxycontin/Percocet. Thanks!
