LifeLabs data breach class action settlement

LifeLabs agreed to a multimillion-dollar settlement to resolve claims that it failed to prevent a ransomware data breach in 2019 that compromised the information of 8.6 million patients.

The settlement benefits current and former LifeLabs users in Canada whose personal information was compromised by the 2019 data breach.

According to the data breach class action lawsuit, LifeLabs was the victim of a ransomware attack in 2019 that compromised 8.6 million users’ sensitive personal information. Plaintiffs in the case argue that LifeLabs could have prevented the data breach with reasonable cybersecurity measures.

LifeLabs is Canada’s largest community lab. The lab provides general diagnostic, naturopathic, genetics and heart-monitoring tests.

LifeLabs hasn’t admitted wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement to resolve the data breach class action lawsuit. LifeLabs will pay a guaranteed $4.9 million, and up to an additional $4.9 million depending on the number of claims submitted.

Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive a cash payment of $50. Depending on the number of claims filed, claimants could receive payments of up to $150. 

The deadline to object to or opt out of the settlement has passed.

The settlement was granted approval on Oct. 25, 2023.

In order to receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by April 6, 2024.
