A $1.82 million Nissan data breach resulted in compensation for Canadians whose information was compromised in a 2017 cyber attack.
The settlement benefits Canadian residents who had an active lease or loan with Nissan between Dec. 22, 2016 and Jan. 12, 2017
The settlement also benefits Quebec residents who received a data breach notification letter in January 2018.
Plaintiffs in two data breach class action lawsuits claim that Nissan failed to protect consumers from a December 2017 cyber attack. During this breach, a hacker allegedly emailed the company claiming to have information about its customers. They demanded that Nissan pay a ransom to return the data.
Nissan is an automotive manufacturer that sells cars under the Nissan and Infiniti brands.
Nissan hasnโt admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $1.82 million to resolve the data breach class action lawsuit.
Under the Nissan data breach settlement terms, class members with documented losses can receive up to $2,500 in reimbursement. Class members without documented losses are still eligible for payments, but they will instead receive a one time payment of up to $35 for lost time.
The deadline for exclusion and objection has already passed.
The settlement was granted final approval on April 24, 2024.
Class members must submit a valid claim form by Oct. 21, 2024, to receive Nissan data breach settlement payments.
