The HIV drug Truvada has potentially been linked to serious Truvada side effects such as kidney disease and bone density loss. Patients who took Truvada and developed kidney and/or bone injuries may have a legal claim.

What is Truvada?

Truvada (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) is a prescription HIV medication that is marketed by Gilead. Truvada is the most popular version of the drug, but tenofovir disoproxil fumarate is also sold under the following brand names:

  • Atripla
  • Complera
  • Stribild
  • Symfi-Lo
  • Cimduo
  • Viread

Health Canada approved Truvada in 2016 for adults who are at high risk of sexually acquired HIV. The drug is meant to be taken daily in combination with safer sex practices to reduce the risk of contracting HIV.

Patients must be HIV-negative while taking Truvada. Therefore, they must be tested for HIV immediately before they are prescribed the drug. They must be tested for HIV at least every three months while taking the medication.

What is Truvada Used For?

Truvada is a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication that protects individuals before they come into contact with HIV-1. The Truvada HIV drug is taken once daily.

To minimize the risk of contracting HIV, people taking Truvada should also engage in safer sex practices such as using condoms, getting tested regularly for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, and talking to their sexual partners about their status.

What is the Cost of Truvada in Canada?

In Canada, Truvada can cost as much as $1,000 per month. Generic versions of the Truvada HIV medication typically cost between $250 and $280 per month without insurance coverage, depending on the pharmacy.

Most insurance plans now cover Truvada and other HIV drugs, meaning patients may pay significantly less for their prescription. Prescription medications are free for individuals aged 24 or younger under the OHIP+ program in Ontario.Fingers holding a pill up close regarding information on Truvada side effects

Who Uses Truvada?

Truvada is used by individuals who are at risk of contracting HIV through sex. Before receiving a prescription for the Truvada HIV medication, the patient must be confirmed to be HIV negative and remain HIV negative while taking the drug. Patients must be tested for HIV immediately before taking the drug and must be tested at least every three months while taking Truvada.

It is important to note that Truvada must be taken daily in order to be effective. It is not a drug to take only when you have had sex. It is also important to take additional precautions such as using condoms when having sex and getting regular HIV tests. Truvada does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections.

What Are the Side Effects of Truvada?

Some Truvada side effects that have been reported include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, kidney injuries and bone injuries. The reported Truvada kidney injuries include acute kidney injuries, chronic kidney disease, renal failure and related nephritic injuries. Reported Truvada bone injuries include bone fractures, osteoporosis, osteopenia and related orthopedic injuries.

Nearly 20,000 HIV patients have reportedly been diagnosed with kidney disease after taking TDF-based medications such as Truvada, and nearly 6,000 bone fractures have allegedly been linked to TDF.

Allegedly, Gilead was aware of these Truvada side effects as early as 2001 but failed to properly warn physicians and patients. To make matters worse, Gilead reportedly delayed putting safer HIV medications on the market to allegedly maximize its profits on Truvada and other TDF drugs, selling the HIV medications to patients who were already facing significant health concerns.

Have Truvada Lawsuits Been Filed?

Some individuals who suffered bone and/or kidney injuries after taking the Truvada HIV drug have filed Truvada lawsuits seeking to hold Gilead accountable for failing to warn about the drug’s risks. The plaintiffs are also seeking compensation for their injuries, pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost wages, and other losses they’ve suffered due to the serious Truvada side effects.

Can You File a Truvada Lawsuit?

If you experienced any of the following bone or kidney Truvada side effects, you may be eligible to file a Truvada lawsuit or Truvada class action lawsuit:

  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Declining kidney function
  • Acute kidney injury
  • Acute renal failure
  • Fanconi syndrome
  • Tubular dysfunction
  • Bone fractures
  • Osteopenia
  • Osteoporosis

Although a Truvada lawsuit cannot take away your injuries, it could allow you to obtain significant compensation for your medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other injuries you suffered due to taking the Truvada HIV drug.

If your legal issue affects a large number of consumers, you may be eligible to file a class action lawsuit to hold the company accountable and seek compensation for all of those affected.
