Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard has been ordered to face extradition to the United States to face sex crime charges once his criminal trial in Canada is complete.ย

Federal Justice Minister David Lametti gave the order to extradite the 80-year-old, the Associated Press reports.ย

Nygard was arrested in Winnipeg in 2020, using the Extradition Act, and charged with nine counts of sex crimes from his time in New York. The former fashion head has been accused of using his position in the industry to sexually assault women and girls, the AP reports.ย

According to the U.S. extradition request, Nygardโ€™s accusers claim he coerced them into having sexual relations through either physical force or financial means.ย

Nygard Has Denied All Allegations

Nygard has denied the allegations set against him while agreeing to be extradited back to the United States to face down the charges, the AP reports.ย

A class action lawsuit has also been filed in the United States against Nygard by 57 women who claim they were sexually assaulted by the fashion magnate. Nygard has also been charged with six counts of sexual asault and three counts of forcible confinement by a court in Toronto for allegations ranging from the late 1980s to mid-2000s, the AP reports.ย ย

A court in Toronto earlier this year denied a request from Nygard, who claims he is innocent of these charges, as well, to be let out on bail. Nygard would not have been able to leave jail even if he had been granted bail in Toronto; however, since the extradition case had already declined to do so, the AP reports.ย ย

In total, Nygard has been accused of committing sex crimes in Toronto, New York, Winnipeg, Los Angeles and at property he owns in the Bahamas.ย

In 2020, a class action lawsuit was filed on behalf of the alleged sexual assault victims of Franรงois Lamarre, a former Montreal police officer and soccer coach who died while awaiting trial.ย
