Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup have announced a recall of more than 5 million above-ground pools due to a serious safety concern.
The Bestway, Intex, Polygroup pool recall targets pools 48 inches and taller, which feature compression straps that could allow children to climb into the pool, posing a drowning hazard.
The recall was issued on July 21, and affects pools sold since 2002. These pools, which include models from Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup, have been available at major retailers such as Walmart, Target, and Amazon, as well as online.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) believes nine children, aged 22 months to 3 years, have drowned after gaining access to these pools via the footholds created by the straps.
“The compression strap that surrounds the outside of the pool legs may create a foothold, allowing a child access to the pool, posing a drowning risk,” the recall notice says.
The incidents leading to the recall occurred between 2007 and 2022 in states such as California, Texas, and Michigan. Despite the serious nature of these incidents, no additional fatalities have been reported in Canada.
The pools have been sold at various price points, ranging from $400 to over $1,000, depending on the model and accessories.
The recall applies to various models, including Bestway’s Power Steel and Coleman Power Steel, Intex’s Metal Frame Pools, and Polygroup’s Summer Waves, among others. The CPSC and Health Canada have identified these models as having been sold extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada, with approximately 266,000 units sold in Canada alone.
Recall urges consumers urged to obtain free repair kit
The recall notice emphasizes the importance of immediate action by pool owners.
To address the issue, Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup are offering repair kits to consumers. These kits are designed to replace the problematic compression straps with a safer alternative. Consumers are urged to secure the repair before cutting and removing the existing strap.
Consumers are advised to contact Bestway, Intex, or Polygroup to obtain the free repair kit. This kit includes a rope that replaces the compression strap, maintaining the pool’s structural integrity while eliminating the foothold risk.
For more information, consumers can contact Bestway at 844-593-4003, Intex at 800-549-8829, or Polygroup at 888-621-4137. Additional details are available on the companies’ respective websites and through their customer service emails.
