Embattled exercise company Peloton has issued a recall of its TR02 Tread model in Canada after reports that the treadmillโs touchscreen can detach and fall off, potentially harming users.ย ย
Consumers who purchased one of more than 5,000ย Peloton Tread treadmills model TR02 should stop using the device and contact the company for a full refund or free repair, saysย a recallย noticeย issued by Health Canada Wednesday. The touchscreen on the device can detach and fall, leading to injuries, says the report.ย ย
โConsumers should immediately stop using the recalled treadmills and contact Peloton for a full refund,โ warns Health Canada. โPeloton is offering consumers who do not want a refund the option of waiting for a free inspection and repair that will secure the touchscreen to the treadmill to help prevent future incidents.โย
The recalled Peloton Tread are black with a non-slatted running belt. They have a touchscreen and side rails with the Peloton logo. Consumers can find the model number TR02 on a black sticker on the end cap of the treadmillโs deck, states the recall notice.ย ย
The recalled treadmill was sold in Canada between February and May of this year. It is made in China and Taiwan and distributed through Peloton Interactive Canada in Vancouver, which is owned by US-based company Peloton.ย ย
More than 80 injuries have been reported, including three concerning children, states the notice, which says the Peloton Tread recall is a joint effort between Health Canada, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the company.ย ย
The notice says that this recall is different from theย Peloton Tread+ recallย issued this week in the United States โ several weeks after reports of severe injuries and even one death after children were sucked under the treadmill. Indeed, Peloton faces legal action over the Tread+ already, with aย consumer class action lawsuitย pending in California and potentialย investor class action lawsuitsย allegingย the company failed to properly address safety concerns.ย ย
Health Canada notes that Peloton never sold the Tread+ in Canada.ย ย
