- Why: The recall was initiated over concerns that the tents stove jack ring can deteriorate and cause the tents to fill up with smoke.
- Where: The recall is nationwide and in Canada.
Westfield Outdoor has issued a recall for around 5,050 Cabela’s brand Outdoor and Big Horn tents over concerns related to smoke inhalation.
The recall was initiated after Westfield discovered the stove jack ring in the recalled Cabela’s tents can begin to deteriorate when exposed to high temperatures as a result of coming in contact with a stove pipe.
Westfield says the issue can cause the recalled tents to fill up with smoke and put users at risk of suffering from smoke inhalation, according to a recall alert published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on July 14.
The recalled tents include certain Cabela’s Ultimate Alaknak Outfitter Tents and its Big Horn 6P Tent which were sold exclusively at Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops, according to the tent recall.
Westfield is also conducting a recall for the same products in Canada — where around 830 Cabela’s tents are affected.
The recalled Cabela’s tents are designed to be able to accomodate a wood stove inside of the tent, with the stove pipe meant to exit the tent through the stove jack ring, which is supposed to provide a seal between the stove top and the tent, according to the Cabela’s recall.
Consumers advised to stop using wood stoves inside recalled Cabela’s tents
Westfield is advising consumers to immediately stop using a wood stove inside of the recalled Cabela’s tents and to contact the company in order to receive a free replacement stove jack ring.
The company says it has received three reports of stove top rings deteriorating due to heat, causing the tent to fill with smoke — leading to one report of smoke inhalation.
Westfield has also received one report of a tent user developing frostbite as a result of having to stop using their wood stove whilst camping, according to the Cabela’s recall.
The recalled Cabela’s tents were sold nationwide at Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops nationwide for between $900 and $1,500 from August 2019 to November 2020.
A separate recall was initiated last year for outdoor playsets manufactured by Backyard Play Systems and sold under several brands at Costco and Lowe’s.
