Quebec Apple customers could benefit from a $6 million AppleCare settlement resolving claims the tech giant did not disclose limited battery life spans when selling protection plans.

The settlement benefits Canadian consumers who purchased AppleCare or AppleCare+ for an iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, iPod, MacBook or other Apple product in Quebec between Dec. 20, 2015, and Jan. 26, 2023.

According to the class action lawsuit, Apple failed to disclose the limited life span of the rechargeable batteries used in its devices. Consumers claim this knowledge could have influenced their decision to purchase Apple products and AppleCare protection.

AppleCare is a hardware and software support subscription Apple sells alongside its iPhones, Macs and other devices.

Apple Canada hasnโ€™t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $6 million to resolve the battery class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the settlement, class members whose information Apple can verify and provide will automatically receive $25 for each AppleCare contract they purchased during the class period. Consumers will receive these settlement benefits as an e-payment to their email or, if an email address cannot be found, a check to their last known address.

Class members can receive larger payments of up to 50% of what they paid for all AppleCare contracts during the class period but must file a claim with documentation to receive these larger sums.

There is no exclusion or objection deadline for the settlement.

The Superior Court of Quebec granted final approval for the settlement March 19, 2024.

Class members will automatically receive certain benefits but must file a valid claim form by July 25, 2024 to receive larger payments.

Whoโ€™s Eligible
