Yahoo agreed to pay more than $20 million as part of a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it failed to prevent multiple data breaches between 2013 and 2016.
The Yahoo settlement benefits Canadian residents who had a Yahoo account at any time between Jan. 1, 2012, and Dec. 31, 2016.
According to a class action lawsuit, Yahoo failed to prevent multiple data breaches between 2013 and 2016 due to inadequate cybersecurity measures. Plaintiffs in the case say they suffered damages as a result of the Yahoo data breaches, including fraud, identity theft and the increased risk of both.
Yahoo is an online search engine that provides email, news and other online services.
The company hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $20.3 million to resolve the data breach class action lawsuit.
Under the terms of the Yahoo settlement, class members can collect a cash payment based on the damages they experienced as a result of the data breaches. Class members can collect up to $25,000 for documented out-of-pocket costs, up to 25% reimbursement of the cost of advertisement-free or premium email services and up to 25% reimbursement of the cost of Yahoo or Aabaco Small Business services.
Class members who do not claim reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses can still claim up to five hours of lost time at $25 per hour for each Yahoo data breach for which they received a notice. If the total value of these claims exceed the settlement money set aside for them, class member payments may be reduced on a pro rata basis.
Class members who qualify for these payments may elect to waive their compensation in favor of receiving two years of free credit-monitoring services. These services are valued at $478.
There are no exclusion or objection deadlines listed in the settlement notice.
The settlement was granted final approval on Feb. 9, 2021, in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and on May 25, 2022, in the Queen’s Bench for Saskatchewan.
To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Dec. 27, 2024.
