WestJet agreed to provide $12.5 million in credits to consumers who paid baggage fees on international and Canadian domestic flights.
The WestJet baggage fee settlement benefits individuals who paid a fee for their first checked baggage for a WestJet flight booked directly with the airline. Additionally, individuals must have tickets issued on or after Sept. 15, 2014, for travel between Oct. 29, 2014, and July 29, 2017, for Canadian domestic flights or tickets issued on or after Nov. 3, 2015, for travel between Jan. 6, 2016, and Feb. 27, 2019, for international flights.
According to the baggage fee class action lawsuit, WestJet charged baggage fees despite promising in its tariffs not to charge these fees on customers’ first checked bags. Passengers say WestJet misled them and they were surprised to be charged a higher price when they checked in for their flights.
WestJet is a Canadian airline that offers both domestic and international flights.
WestJet hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to the $12.5 million settlement to resolve the baggage fee class action lawsuit.
Under the terms of the WestJet baggage fee settlement, class members can receive a WestJet Travel bank credit that can be used towards WestJet flights within 24 months and without any blackout periods. Credit values will depend on the number of valid claims filed with each claimant receiving a pro rata share of the $12.5 million credit pool. These credits are not transferable but can be used to book for other guests.
There is no exclusion or objection deadline for the settlement.
The baggage fee class action lawsuit settlement was granted approval on May 13, 2024.
To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Feb. 10, 2025.
