Bโnai Brith Canada is filing suit against the federal government claiming it failed to list Iranโs Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), in its entirety, as a terrorist organization.
Bโnai Brith Canada is a Jewish community support organization. It, and several others, including the Council of Iranian Canadians and Justice 88, reportedly went public with their message to the government to stop delays related to adding IRGC to the terrorist list.
Though the United States listed the IRGC as a terrorist organization in April of 2019, Canada has only listed an external branch of the group, Quds Force, but not the entire organization.
According to a statement released by Bโnai Brith Canada, being named on Canadaโs terrorist list carries several consequences. Those named cannot legally operate in Canada, notes the group. Additionally, Canadians are forbidden from supporting groups listed.
According to the Bโnai Brith Canada lawsuit, the House of Commons passed a motion to list the IRGC as a terrorist group twenty months ago. The group alleges in their lawsuit that the government, as well as the Minister of Public Safety and Preparedness, has unreasonably delayed the process.
“We made it clear last month that no further delays by the government would be accepted by Canadians,” Michael Mostyn, Chief Executive Officer of the group said of the Bโnai Brith Canada lawsuit. “Unfortunately, there is no alternative at this point to legal recourse. It is intolerable that 20 months have elapsed since this important motion passed, and no action has been taken by our government to implement it.โ
The Bโnai Brith Canada lawsuit comes in the wake of the downing of the Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 and the revelation that the IRGC shot the plane down with missiles. All of the flight crew and passengers were killed as a result, including 57 Canadians.
“The IRGC poses a very serious security threat to Canadians. Listing it as a terrorist entity in this country is necessary to deter this threat and reduce its ability to do harm,” continued Mostyn in his statement regarding the Bโnai Brith Canada lawsuit.
According to the groupโs statement announcing the lawsuit, the IRGC has carried out many deadly attacks on foreign soil, as well as supporting and organizing them. However, because the IRGC is not included on Canadaโs terrorist list, it is legal to provide funds and other support to the group, according to Bโnai Brith Canada.
In addition, Bโnai Brith Canada lawsuit claims the IRGC is behind groups that incite anti-Semitism and hatred of Israel in Toronto.
At a recent rally supported by IRGC in Tehran, the slogan โWe are Jew-Killersโ was used, says the group.
“The government must act immediately – and our lawsuit aims to ensure this immediate action,” says Mostyn.
