COVID-19 Personal Safety Products Recall Overview:

  • Who: Health Canada has issued recalls of two COVID-19-related products
  • Why: The company issued recalls for KN95 face masks from Guangdong Fei Gan Mstar Technology Ltd and SARS-COV-2  Rapid Antigen Test Nasal kits from SD Biosensor, Inc.
  • Where: The recalls are effective in Canada.

If you have either of these COVID-19 testing or protection products, you might not be as safe as you think.

Health Canada has issued a recall of a common face mask and a COVID-19 nasal test kit, one because it doesn’t work and the other because it contains unauthorized elements.

The companies currently are not facing legal action over the recalls, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits

In a recall notice posted to the Health Canada website Nov. 26, the agency said it was recalling all Guangdong Fei Gan Mstar Technology Ltd branded KN95 masks due to lack of efficacy.

Health Canada said the importer of the product had been informed that the specifications of the mask do not meet the requirements or the laboratories were not reliable and verifiable.

“Not all respirators meet the minimum 95 percent filtration rate required,” the recall says.

Consumers should contact the manufacturer if they require additional information.

Meanwhile, Health Canada is also recalling eight lots of SARS-COV-2  Rapid Antigen Test Nasal kits made by SD Biosensor, Inc. The recall notice was also issued Nov. 26.

In the case of the nasal test kits, Health Canada said the manufacturer had “erroneously distributed” some of the kits with Medico swabs, which are not included in the current government interim order authorization for that kit.

COVID-Related Products Face Recalls in Both Canada and The U.S.

The recalls come after Health Canada issued a warning in April over the potential health risk posed by wearing face masks that contain graphene, while investigating amassing complaints.

Meanwhile, in the United States, more than 2.2 million at-home COVID-19 tests made by Australian company Ellume are being recalled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in a Class 1 recall—the agency’s most serious type of recall—as they can show false positives.
