Put down the shuck and check those oysters! Raw BC is recalling a batch of its raw oysters due to possible norovirus contamination.

The oysters were sold in hotels, restaurants and other institutions in British Columbia, according to the recall notice posted by the Canadian Government.

It says the possible microbial contamination only affects raw oysters sold by the dozen with code LF 1402294, Subarea 14-8 and Lot Number 22020135 that were harvested on Jan. 31, 2022.

The company is urging consumers not to use, sell, serve or distribute the affected product.

Norovirus Can Cause Serious Gastrointestinal Symptomsย

Norovirus can cause symptoms of gastroenteritis within 12 to 48 hours of exposure. Norovirus symptoms may include diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, nausea, low-grade fever, headache, muscle aches, chills and/or fatigue.

People experiencing diarrhea and/or vomiting should drink plenty of liquids to prevent dehydration. Norovirus symptoms generally subside within a day or two and do not typically cause long-term health effects.

In 2020, The Canadian Food Inspection Agency had to recall certain Sawmill Bay Shellfish brand Pacific Aquacultured Oysters due to norovirus contamination, which made a number of consumers sick.

Last July, Washington State issued a recall of live oysters from the Samish Bay area after numerous cases of vibrio parahaemolyticus illnesses were reported and traced back to the oysters from the area. At the time of the recall, there had been 52 lab-confirmed cases, of which 46 were foodborne vibrio parahaemolyticus cases. The vibrio outbreak was the worst on record for the month of July with the next highest number of 25 reported in 2018.
